Introduction to the Team
Alexis: I am in school to become an elementary teacher. I am very grateful to be learning about Indigenous issues now, so that I may have the education to direct compassionate and informed lessons which help future children develop an invested interest in Canada’s relationship with First Nations. My research interest is Native stereotypes in both the Canadian nation-build and literary canon.
Dana: I am in my 4th year majoring in English literature hoping to graduate this year and continue pursuing career in the education. I am passionate about reading and exploring international literature, so this exposure to Indigenous literature, both oral and written, is really precious to me as something I was really blank about before (my roots are Eastern-European). My focus of research with this team will be to put an emphasis on the place Indigenous literature has in the world literature and to contribute to understanding the influence it had on other North American authors.
Katrina: I am currently an English Literature major also doing a minor in Asian Studies. Because of this, I am interested in all sorts of literature, and have been particularly taken with researching stories told by Indigenous voices about Indigenous voices (ie: Thomas King), as I feel as though, despite being Canadian, I have been left in the dark regarding my Indigenous peers and their representation in literature. My research will further add to our overall goal of championing Indigenous voice because we realize the importance of historical intervention.
Anna: I am interested in researching old, famous colonial stories about Indigenous peoples written by non-Indigenous peoples. This will help us further understand the harm and therefore, the historical necessity of an intervention strategy.
